Popularity

Hi again. So, since so many of you liked Outward Appearances the best, here's a little follow-up. Still the same verse, but this time a different focus. To refresh your memory, the verse was Proverbs 31:30; "Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord will be blessed." This time around, I want to focus on the charm part.
I interpret charm to mean, in our modern world, popularity. Yes, I can see why popularity and beauty are paired together in this verse. They go hand in hand. Apparently, if you're pretty, you're popular, and it's awful hard to be popular if you ain't got looks. Again, to the twisted word-views. What is the world's grading scale for popularity? To see this, you really don't have to be that observant. It's all around you. Homecoming Queen is just one example. Now, the teachers say, "Don't just look on appearances! This girl has to be pretty, as well as smart and kind." Good luck teachers. Like that ever happens. Most likely, most people will be blackmailed to vote for that pretty little control freak. Now, this might not happen at ALL schools, but this is what usually happens. So, beauty, check. That's one down on the rubric. Next is a quote from Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. The characters were having a rather lengthy and boring conversation about how a woman can be deemed accomplished. But what I related it to was popularity. "she must possess a certain something in her air and manner of walking, the tone of her voice, her address and expressions" That is what I tend to see in those so-called popular girls. The ones that you can sense are used to being followed and obeyed, the ones who walk in a certain manner of dignity, often undeserved. You can tell in their voices how they think of themselves and what they think of you. Their faces will be perfectly crafted to let you see only what they want you to see. And the problem is, so many people want to be popular. Jodi Picoult's book Nineteen Minutes is a total example of that. And, it's not yours to decide if you get to be popular or not. The opposite genders play a hand in this part. The popular girls are decided by the boys, and the popular boys are decided by the girls. So, really, any part on popularity is out of your hands. And, besides, the same point I'll come around to as Outward Appearances, popularity is NOT going to get you good things! So, you've got the hottest boy/girlfriend. So what? It's not like you're going to marry them. That only happens in perfect romance scenarios, which the world is pretty short of at the moment. No, back to my point I made in the previous post. The Lord is the only person from where you will get blessings. Understand?

Below is a link to the Broadway song Popular from Wicked. I think you'll find it quite entertaining.
