How-To: Act Like You're Not Crying When You Are (Or Vice Versa)

Yes, this is a much desired skill. Scenarios: Watching a really dramatic movie but not wanting to seem like a baby, trying to comfort your crying friend without crying yourself to just make them feel worse, and when you really need to skip out of gym class (because you've got girly issues, but your coach is a guy), but your coach is seriously insensitive. Yeah, girls, ya'll've got to admit with me that it's true. So, I thought I would write a little how-to on crying.

How NOT to cry:

So, I was watching Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. Wow, that movie was really touching. So, I started tearing up a little, right? But I was watching it with my parents, you see, and no movie gets too them because they always think movie are horrible renditions of life. So, of course, I was embarrassed to cry. But, that part when he's yelling at his grandfather, it was just too much and tears were about to fall. But, what you do is, number one rule: DO NOT BLINK! If the tears are only just welling up, then, you can keep them in. Nonchalantly look up sometimes. If you make your face level the tears will go down a little. And roll your eyes around, too, it'll help rid the tears. You'll be able keep your face upright, though, as long as there aren't that many tears pooled in your eyes. If you've really got to blink, though, because those tears are too many and your eyesights blurred, depending on your situation, mask it with an action that brings you hands to your face. A couple of examples: pinching the bridge of your nose, but making sure your fingers run over the bottoms of your eyelids, too, to wipe away unwanted tears (usually paired with a impatient sigh through the nose); creating a fatigue façade by bringing your hands up to your face and swiping them up your face (paired with a tried yawn/sigh); and unnoticeably leaning into and blinking into a certain piece of fabric (whether it be your bestie's shirt's shoulder spot, a pillow, a blanket, etc.)

How TO cry:
Okay, number one thing I've learned on this from the chicks at my school. If someone cries right in front of you, you're gonna cry. I'm serious! I promise you, it's like a chain reaction. Domino effect. But, if you WANT to cry, chances are that not many will be crying around you. So, what you can do, I know people always say think of something sad, but, no, that's not what works, you have to RECREATE the sadness. You know, like, if you're talking, pour emotion into your voice, inject the sadness into that, and eventually you'll get all sadded up. Think of a sad situation, in which there should be some crying. Don't be afraid to show movement. Going through the motions usually accompanied with crying should make the tears flow quicker. Like: waving your hands in front of your eyes, tracing your bottom eyelids, and rubbing your eyes with the heels of your hands. Also, don't forget to make sounds. Sniffling, break your voice. It works, trust me. And, final rule, never break the act. Don't turn around behind your back and smile at someone. Really, I've done it before, and almost blew it.

Well, I sincerely hoped that helped you! I will update as I come across better information!
